West Orange, New Jersey
The owners of a four-story townhouse condominium wanted to expand their outdoor living spaces through update of terraces off the kitchen and bedrooms, the front entry, and a patio and garden off the ground level living room and master bedroom. A serene color, material, lighting, and furnishings palette connects indoor and outdoor spaces and creates a more open and expansive feeling throughout the townhouse. Sustainably-sourced materials, including ipe wood decking and tiles, porcelain pavers, contemporary white LED outdoor lighting, and Gloster aluminum and wood modular lounge furniture, were used throughout the spaces. A custom-designed acoustical wood privacy wall was installed to visually screen and buffer noise from the adjacent neighbor's air conditioner equipment.
Plantings were designed to soften exterior spaces, screen common area landscaping and decaying retaining walls, and add privacy from neighboring units and a nearby golf course. To maximize space, planter boxes with tall grasses and a hedge of bast growing cherry laurel shrubs were placed along the perimeter of the patio. New planting beds in the surrounding yard include a mix of evergreen shrubs, tall Karl Foerster Feather Reed grasses. Large Globemaster alliums add a pop of brilliant color in early summer.
