SPRINGS COTTAGE

East Hampton, NY

The new owner of a charming cottage in the historic Springs neighborhood of East Hampton wanted an intimate private garden with screening from nearby neighbors and the street.  The design approach took advantage of a towering grove of oaks to create peaceful informal spaces throughout the yard.  The existing driveway was demolished and shifted to the side of the front yard to add green space in the front yard.  A new contemporary steel and pea gravel driveway surrounded by a mix of bright purple, blue and silver perennials and grasses offers a lively and welcoming entrance experience and street presence.  To address extensive exposure from the street and adjacent yards,  new wood fencing and gates, layers of mixed evergreens trees, shrubs, grasses and perennials along the perimeter were added.  Bluestone stepping stones set in grass lead visitors through gates to the front and rear wood decks.
